Welcome to Sharkey County, Mississippi! Our county is 435 miles of rich farm land that produces corn, soybeans, rice, and cotton. Crops produced here in Sharkey County feed and clothe people throughout our state, our country, and the world.
Sharkey County is the home of the only National Bottomland Hardwood Forest in the United States. The Delta National Forest contains four greentree reservoirs for waterfowl and is an excellent place to watch migratory species of waterfowl. The Blue Lake Recreational area located in the forest offers fishing opportunities as well as a one mile interpretative trail for hiking.
The people of Sharkey County, Mississippi are what makes it a special place to live and work. Each year, The Great Delta Bear Affair is held on the fourth Saturday of the month of October. This event was first held in 2002 to observe the 100th anniversary of President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt’s famous Sharkey County bear hunt. By the way, it was this hunt that resulted in the creation of the teddy bear. Education Day is held for area fourth graders on the Friday before the affair. At this event, children can take part in interactive activities and experience fantastic learning activities at educational booths set up around the courthouse square in Rolling Fork, Mississippi.
The Deep Delta Festival is a family friendly event held each May in Rolling Fork. The event brings the community together for live music from local bands, good food, free health screenings, and a 5K walk/run.
Families with children residing in Sharkey County are served by the South Delta School District and Sharkey-Issaquena Academy.
